I truly believe that most people have good hearts and good intentions. Most people would like to see our world become a better place and would like to contribute to the greater good, but they don’t always know how. "I’m only one person," they say to themselves. "I’m nobody special. I have no influence, and very little money. What could I ever really do to change the world? I don’t have a million dollars to donate to worthy causes. I can’t quit my job and devote seven days a week to doing good deeds. And the world’s problems are just too big, anyway. How could I possibly make a dent in them?"
Well, I believe that our problems can be solved, and each individual human being, no matter who they are, can provide a link in that chain. Over the years, I’ve thought long and hard about my reason for being here on earth, what I’d like to accomplish while I’m here, and what I can do to make my life more meaningful. And I realized that the times I’ve felt the best about myself, the most engaged with life, the most useful, and the most deeply rewarded were the times when I was helping someone, inspiring someone, uplifting someone.
What I hope to accomplish now is to inspire that same feeling in others; to start a chain reaction. When one person goes out and does something to help or uplift others, these acts in turn can influence others to do something kind or helpful. If enough people are inspired to act, pretty soon we’ve got an entire world full of people offering love, hope and kindness to each other. At that point, earth would be a wonderful place to live, don’t you think?
Yes, I know it’s unrealistic to think that all people can be inspired to work for the greater good, but most people will reach out to lend a helping hand -- if they are inspired to do so and shown how. If enough people can be touched by love and kindness, it can mean the difference between a world filled with suffering, despair and isolation and a world filled with kindness, cooperation and unity.
All it takes to get the ball rolling is for one individual to decide to do something to create a change for the better. Thus, I have decided to do my part by launching "The Global Citizenship Project" on this website in order to reach out to others who want to help. However, I’m nobody special. I am just as human as the next person. I get angry, I get lazy, I make mistakes, and I feel selfish and resentful and down in the dumps at times, just like everybody else. The point I’m trying to make is that if I can do something to contribute to the greater good, anyone can. We’re all human, and we all have our flaws, but the bottom line is, what matters is that we make an effort to push past our flaws and our bad days and just do something, anything, no matter how small, to contribute something positive to the world.
If you would like to do more for the world in your daily life beyond participating in our "Planetary Peace Gathering," this section of the website is for you. We have listed a number of ways you can make a difference -- simple things ordinary people like you and I can do to help others and help the planet. Some are basic "global citizenship" habits you can adopt into your daily routines; but we have also included actual projects you can do either on your own or with others in your community.
ALL of these suggestions and projects have one thing in common: They’re designed to tap into the energy of LOVE. Love is the most powerful force in the universe, and therefore anything that stems from a desire to be kind to others adds to the greater good of the world.
