PLANET ASPECTS

The Sun and Moon
At the time of our birth, the planets (through their configurations and relationships) tell us something about the quality of the moment of time into which we were born. Each planet points to special traits within us. Yet, of all the planets, the two most important planets to astrologers are the "lights," the Sun and the Moon. From where we stand here on Earth, the great shining Sun by day and the reflecting Moon at night are our constant companions. The Sun and Moon are our greatest guides in understanding our children, their temperament, personality, relationship with parents and other significant adults, their sense of purpose, their feelings and much more! The Sun and Moon give us clues as to where our children are headed and how we can help them on the way.

The Sun: Identity, Ego, Will, Father
The Sun represents our identity, or self and as such, colors every other aspect of the chart. In a child's chart, the Sun will reveal much about her emerging personality. Your child's greatest strengths and challenges are often described by the qualities of her Sun Sign. A Leo child, for example, is a born leader but may be pompous. A Piscean youngster may draw upon a rich imagination to inspire others, but may seek to escape reality by retreating into a fantasy world. The wise parent will train the child to manifest the positive qualities of her Sun Sign. The position of the Sun also helps us understand what motivates our children. A child with a Fire sign Sun such as Aries, will generally be motivated by seeking new experiences in which she can assert herself, whereas a Water sign Sun child is more emotional and will seek comfort and security before venturing out. Children born into Earth signs tend to be grounded. They're builders and seek means of practical expression. They want to know, "How does it work?" Air sign Sun children can experience life through thoughts and thrive on social interaction and communication. The Sun also represents the child's perception of the father (or dominant parent) and the qualities the child identifies with within the father. From here, we extend our understanding of this relationship to authorities and adults in general and later, to the child's understanding of her own life purpose. For example, a child with the Sun in harmonious aspect to Mars would likely feel supported by the father and therefore more prone to self confidence than a child born with the Sun square Mars. The latter might feel blocked on some level by the father or dominant parent. Both, however, are dynamic positions indicating leadership potential.

Sun Pis
Pisces is a Water sign on the thinking cross. Its symbol is The Fishes bonded together but swimming in opposite directions. Water sign children are typically sensitive, responsive, affectionate and kind. Water is reflective so Piscean children enjoy peaceful surroundings. They often benefit through meditation and enjoy listening to classic music. Pisceans are known to be long-suffering, taking a lot for the sake of upholding beliefs and ideals. Your child will look for ways to help others but must learn to discriminate lest she be taken advantage of because of her inherent kindness.

Children born under this sign "pick up" easily on vibrations. They can be impressionable on a subconscious level. That is to say, they can absorb the atmosphere around them. What you observe as your Piscean youngster's "moods" may actually be a barometric reading of family or school ambience. Behavior patterns as well can be copied almost by osmosis! Sometimes Piscean children empathize so much with someone else's burden that tears flow freely. The Pisceans child's sense of individuality may be unclear due to her identification with the suffering of others. Teach her always to affirm her self-worth. The little Piscean who gives freely can be hurt by fair weather friends. She could feel rejected when those less sensitive fail to show appreciation for her services.

One of the greatest lessons in self-mastery for Pisceans is when to give and when to hold back. Continual self-sacrifice can amount to being a door-mat and lead to disappointment. Piscean youngsters who know their self-worth are confident and will seek relationships on more equal footing. Because your child seeks ways to help and care for others, she may enjoy volunteer work for school or church. She would probably enjoy caring for a pet. She has a deep sense of compassion and reaches out to the underdog, whether this be a poor stranger or a bird with a broken wing.

Your child is likely to be unusually intuitive. She may know things without being able to explain why. She may be funny, able to laugh at herself, and inspire others. Piscean children are naturally devotional and respond to religious themes, music and art. Piscean children are imaginative and creative, but may hide in fantasies when the going gets hard. Your child could appear dreamy. Perhaps she is reaching for higher worlds. You can introduce her to the worlds of transcendency through art, music, religion but teach her to keep her feet on the ground. Stress the practical side of life.

One way you can greatly help your little Piscean is to teach her to confront and conquer her fears. Piscean children often are like fish in the water. When she is old enough, you might teach your child to dive in the waves. This physical experience could help her avoid being engulfed by seemingly overwhelming problems later on. Some Piscean youngsters grow up to work in hospitals, churches, and/or spiritual retreats.

Pisces is ruled by Neptune, planet of illusion. Especially if Libra, Leo, Jupiter, the Sun or Venus are strong in the chart, your child could be adept at putting on a mask to suit the occasion or her whims. Intuition, imagination, and a love of fantasy may lead to a career in art, dance, or writing. However, do not allow your child to get away with being (intentionally or unintentionally) manipulative, sneaky or dishonest. In some cases, parents will need fine attunement to discern when the plaintive cries of the Piscean child are an expression of true affliction as opposed to when she might be putting on "crocodile tears' to get your attention!

Good habits are so essential with these children, because the Piscean personality can be addictive. Beware of introducing your child to habits (i.e., such as bribing her with sweets) that could potentially lead to self-destructive habits that are hard to shake in adulthood (i.e., turning to food for comfort, and consequently putting on excess weight).

Sun Sqr Jup
Your child is likely to be enthusiastic and "Sunny." She could be generous, friendly and cheerful. She might have a fair share of bravado and self-confidence. She could also radiate much energy and could probably benefit by plenty of exercise and outdoor play. Nevertheless, until she resolves this aspect, your child may display a tendency, or perhaps a knack, for ignoring good advice. More than once, she may find herself at odds with the correct, or prescribed way of doing things. This could manifest in a problem with authority figures. For example, she may tend to resent or resist the suggestions of her elders, perhaps her father. The father, however, for better or for worse, often sets the pattern influencing the child's behavior.

Your child could be generous but may tend to go overboard, be extravagant, take on too much too soon. Be patient in teaching your child common sense and economy. Teach her to accept responsibility, tackle one job at a time and to finish what she begins. (Positive Saturn aspects might provide the key for helping your child develop self-discipline.)

Sun Cnj Sat
This placement confers a real love of science and natural laws. Your child may be a tireless worker with absolute determination and the ability to carry great projects through to completion. Always the protector to those she comes to know, your child likely is loyal to friends and will tend to have long and secure relationships. She is willing to take on more than her share of responsibility. Let her know you appreciate her help, but make sure she has time for play as well! Some children born with this aspect have to overcome some sort of handicap; perhaps a difficult social, physical or family situation. Later, the acquired self-discipline and striving can lead them to the top. Your child seeks your approval and support; be careful not to be unduly harsh or critical of her. There may be benefit, obligations, or potentially conflict with authority figures or with the father (or dominant parent).

The Moon: Emotions, Habits, Family, Mother
In a child's chart, we look to the position of the Moon to understand the child's perception of her mother, of her need to be cared for and to nurture. The Moon also describes the child's experience within her family, with its particular dynamics, tradition and heritage. From these, the child establishes her roots. The Moon, then, indicates the early childhood environment, our early support systems. Emotional responses are traced to the Moon and hence, to patterns established during childhood (and even during other lifetimes). These often become automatic and subconscious in the adult. Thus, the sign placement of the Moon reveals much about our child's emotional needs and expressions. The Moon may dominate the child's chart during the first 7 years of life. The Moon will tell us what the child needs to feel secure and also what kinds of habits would be helpful or detrimental to her development. For example, a child with a Sagittarian Moon is happy when she has plenty of room to explore. (But she needs to learn the value of limits) A Cancer Moon child, in contrast, may cling to Mom's apron strings. (But she may need to overcome fear of making it on her on).

Mon Ari
Aries is a Fire sign on the action cross. Its symbol is The Ram. Even if your child was born under a milder Sun sign, this lunar position would give her an underlying forcefulness. Your child could be impulsively direct when relating to others, and may act without considering the consequences of her actions. Emotionally, she tends to see things from a self-centered perspective and is likely to take the reactions of others personally. Your child might have a short fuse, and you may need to exercise great patience in helping him control her fiery temper! Consider sports to help her channel abundant energy and to exercise the need to be self-assertive. Teach her to pause and listen to the voice within her, the voice of conscience. (Pinocchio is a great example of a boy to be who had to learn to listen carefully to her conscience.)

The Moon in Aries child is always making choices. In essence she is deciding "Which me do I want to be?" The real me who is patient, truthful and considerate of my friends and family or the angry, impatient, bullying me who demands her own way? Sometimes she has to see her way through a host of charades! She learns best by direct experience. Be consistent in teaching her the consequences of wrong action as well as the rewards of deeds well done! She may perceive her mother as dynamic. Perhaps she encourages her to be independent. If afflicted, she may perceive her as impatient, overbearing, angry.

Mon Sxt Mer
This aspect indicates fluency in communication. Even if your child has an emotional personality, you will be able to reach her through dialogue. She could be a fine speaker. She is likely to be most persuasive! This Moon-Mercury aspect often indicates success in life due to a positive mental attitude.

Mon Tri Mar
Children with this aspect tend to be attractive and physically active. They often enjoy group sports. This child seldom hides how she feels and therefore is no stranger to an occasional argument! She may receive plenty of emotional support as a child, especially from her mother. Nevertheless, she may have to learn to work out her anger. Particularly if the mother is easy to anger, the child could be implosive or explosive. Patience! (For a greater understanding of this aspect, check out Mars by sign.)

Mon Tri Jup
Children with this aspect are often fortunate in that they rarely have trouble finding support and approval from others. Your child may find that working with people is what she wants to do when she grows up! Whether professionally or not, she will likely find herself guiding and directing other people in one way or another. She has a way with others and could do well in advertising, sales... any occupation that works with the public. Unless there are strong counter-indications in the chart, she tends to look on the bright side and may have a good sense of humor. The child with this aspect typically is generous but tends to overdo in some way--in food, in action, in speech. She feels close to the mother, but should not be over-indulged.

The Inner Planets: Mercury and Venus

The planets Mercury and Venus, along with the Sun, Moon and Mars describe the child's emerging personality. These inner planets are located between the orbit of the Earth and the Sun. Venus indicates how the child appreciates and measures her experience, and describes the values established during childhood. Venus tells us how the child expresses love, the things that mean a lot to her, and her appreciation for beauty (or lack of it). Mercury tells us something about our child's perception, verbal expression, schooling --in short, how her mind works, how she thinks and communicates.

Mercury: The Mind and Communication
Mercury represents thoughts, ideas, and the mental process in general. Communications -- by phone, letter, spoken, or however -- are ruled by Mercury. Also thoughts, connections, phone wires, and everything that connects and conveys -- even forms of transportation. In the child's chart, Mercury describes the myriad aspects of schooling -- teachers, study habits, homework, learning skills, concentration (or lack of it). Your child's relationship with brothers and sisters are indicated by Mercury as well. The way your child thinks, receives, shares and transmits information and knowledge will be revealed by studying the position of Mercury in her chart. Mercury relates to hands, fine motor abilities, and to handwriting and drafting skills. Mercury by sign and element tells us how the child studies and what she likes to study, and how we (her parents and teachers) can help her gain greater academic expertise. Children with Mercury in Fire signs think and talk simultaneously and are spontaneous. They enjoy games that make learning fun! Children with Mercury in Air Signs can chatter away and still keep going! Words can come alive for them and they enjoy listening to (or creating) colorful tales and stories. Communication is their thing. They may have to work at being listeners, however! Children with Mercury in Water signs may need help thinking clearly since emotion runs into thoughts. These children like profound subject matter. Children with Mercury in Earth signs generally have a good measure of common sense. Hands on training suits them best.

Mer Aqu
Aquarius is an Air sign on the feeling cross. Its symbol is The Waterbearer. The Mercury in Aquarius child is typically an impartial thinker, democratic to the point of being impersonal. Fascinated by the latest technology, your child is likely to come up with very original and inventive ideas. While you may think she comes up with some pretty off-beat notions, why not test them out? The Aquarian mind is often prophetic, perceiving future trends. She could be simply ahead of her time. She tends to be idealistic and believes in putting into practice what is preached. Her mind is quick, she thinks on her feet, but she may seem strangely aloof at times. She is group-conscious, community-oriented, and a natural reformer. Mercury in Aquarius usually indicates ability in math and sciences. Your child could be quite stubborn, even willful, demanding space to do her own thing her own way. She does need space, its true, but emphasize the responsibility that accompanies true freedom.

Mon Sxt Mer
Chances are your child loves learning, has an inquisitive and curious mind. Given the right teachers and tools, children with this aspect generally like school. She is a natural teacher and communicator. Your child may even have a little too much gift of the gab at times! Your child may often handle words and tell stories with consummate skill, and others love to hear her speak or entertain. This aspect often indicates a good memory. Your child may feel very close to a brother or sister.

Mer Opp Mar
Your child may put a lot of feeling into what she says. Others sense in her high energy and a certain tension. Children with this aspect typically have quick minds, an even sharper tongue, and a penchant for argumentation! This aspect often indicates impatience and irritability and you may need to be very patient in reminding your child to curb her tongue.

Mer Sxt Jup
This aspect often indicates a problem-solver, someone who can think of a way to do almost anything (or think her way out of almost anything)! Children with this aspect have a reputation among their peers of being fair and honest. Typically, they enjoy learning and are confident of their mental abilities. Your child is apt to enjoy traveling and seeks new experiences to broaden her horizons. This aspect indicates an ability to persuade others, and therefore favors politics, counseling and ministerial type work. As an adult, your child may find herself interested in legal matters, publishing, philosophical and religious subjects, and would make a good teacher or instructor. Scientific investigation might interest her also.

Venus: Values, Love, Art
Venus rules our values and sense of appreciation. When we appraise or appreciate something, whether that be another person or a new car, this is Venus -- the sense of love and compassion we may feel. Venus in the child's chart shows us what kinds of things our child appreciates, her innate sense of beauty (which can be developed), the manner in which she interacts with her friends and with adults, and how she shows love. Children with Venus in ardent Leo, for example, are demonstrative and fun-loving. They tend to shine and love bright, colorful things. Venus in Scorpio children, on the other hand, may be shy but exceptionally kind and thoughtful. These children may want Mom all to themselves! The Venus in Libra child is a social butterfly and loves beauty in her clothes and bedroom. Venus in Taurus loves beautiful things, pretty rocks and later precious stones. She may be a gourmet. She may need help learning to share what she sees as prized possessions. A study of Venus by sign, house and aspect also reveals something about your child's taste in food, eating habits, care of possessions and attitude toward money and belongings.

Ven Aqu
Aquarius is an air sign on the feeling cross. Its symbol is The Warerbearer. Aquarian love is often misunderstood. At best, your child has a love for her fellow man, and will see good in all despite race, or creed, or background. Like Will Rogers, she never met a stranger! She loves to exchange ideas of an abstract nature, and is a thinker! Some may see her as a good friend, others may say she is aloof, preferring not get too personal or emotional. In truth, she is a friend's friend! Your child loves to work for a great cause or purpose, and for a better world for all. She has an innate sense of what's fair and democratic, and feels happiest when among friends or as a member of a community. Your child may have acting talent. Sensitivity of heart and tolerance need to be developed with this placement. While she is apt to be popular, your child enjoys her space. She may avoid getting too personal or walk out of a relationship which feels too confining.

Ven Cnj Ura
This child may want free reign to choose her friends who may not always be run of the mill! She values independence and unique talents in others. She may be reluctant to get tied down. A balanced understanding of the question of freedom and commitment in relationships will be more important when she is older. Others are attracted to her because she is generally cheerful and may have a magnetic personality. She enjoys sharing with other children. Your child may radiate a catching "joie de vivre." She probably has a penchant for inventions, electronics, and new-age technology.

Ven Cnj Nep
Children with the planet of beauty coupled with the planet of illusion are very artistic. Even if they themselves are not artists, they could learn art appreciation and generally have an eye for beauty. Your child could be compassionate and kind, and sensitive to others. She could uplift others through the power of love. On the downside, the child with this aspect may be a dreamer, not always drawing the line between fact and fantasy. She could find it easy to be caught up in images -- dreams, psychology, metaphysics, cinema, etc. (she probably loves movies -- anything that flicks on the silver screen.) This aspects indicates a devotional nature. Your child would probably benefit by early religious instruction. Without suitable objects for their affection, these children could misplace their love, getting caught up with rock stars or unreliable characters.

Ven Sxt Plu
People with this aspect are known for getting into intense involvements. They seem to invite emotional confrontations. They seek spiritual regeneration through love. In adult life, they could learn valuable soul lessons through intense karmic relationships. Children with this aspect may cleave to the mother, or to their friends. They may seek to control (or be controlled) by their close pals. Especially during the adolescent years, they could tend to attract partners that aren't particularly good for them. To help your child master this intense aspect, you will need to impart to her solid values regarding sex, money, alcohol and drugs and relationships in general. The better her own sense of self-esteem, the surer she feels in your love, the more likely she will be to attract fulfilling relationships later on. This is a powerfully creative aspect in an artist's chart.

The External Planets: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
The major planets outside the Earth's orbit (external to us) are Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These are the planets describing the outer world and circumstances surrounding the child, the status, well-being and conditions she is born into and what urges her on to greater achievements as she grows. Mars will tune you in to what motivates your child and the way she approaches life. Jupiter shows us how she is most apt to channel that energy, and Saturn decrees what sort of obstacles will confront her on the road to success. Again: Saturn tells us about the territory we will be going through, Jupiter the way or path through it, and Mars what kind of push or drive we can count on to keep going.

Mars: Action Through Desire; Drive, Motivation, and Anger
Mars is the planet of emotion and drive. When we search for the meaning of something, it is Mars that urges us on, keeps us searching. Mars will tell us what motivates our child, what captures her interest. By studying the aspects formed between Mars and other planets we discern if our child expresses desire in a healthy and direct manner or whether she feels blocked (squares) by inner or outer conditions. We also learn how our child expresses anger, whether in strong bursts (Mars in Fire Signs), bottled up and tears (Mars in Water Signs) or with cutting words (Air signs). With greater understanding we can help our child deal with her feelings in a constructive way. Mars tells us about our child's interest and aptitude (or lack of it), for physical exercises, sports, recreation. Mars drives us against things, too, and sends us into war and combat. Mars imparts courage and stamina. The house position of Mars in the child's chart will tell us in what area of life she is likely to enter the greatest degree of active conflict or activity: In the 11th, with friends, in the 3rd, perhaps with sisters and brothers, or in competitive learning at school.

Mar Leo
Leo is a fire sign on the feeling cross. Its symbol is The Lion. The child with Mars in Leo strives to be center-stage. Her actions may say, "Look at me!" Your child's dramatic expressions easily capture the attention of others. Indeed, many actors have Mars in Leo. Leo is the sign of royalty. You child may display the confidence of kings in she regal bearing! Giving orders and being the leader comes naturally to her. She may, however, find it harder to obey orders! Pride, anger and a strong conviction that her way is best may get in the way of cooperating with elders or even with her chums! She could be so forceful that her friends think her bossy. Nevertheless, she may be strangely unaware of the emotional reaction she gets back from other people. She benefits from programs that place a premium on leadership such as Scouts.

Leo relates to the Sun and to the heart. Therefore, children with their action planet in this fiery sign often display generosity of heart and courage. This is a placement of "noblesse oblige" and your child may be the first to help out a friend in need or a bird with a broken wing. The Mars in Leo child tends to react defensively to correction. (Astrologers call the Leo reaction the "wounded knight syndrome.") she may be so sure of herself that she can't imagine being wrong!

Mars in Leo children display exuberant energy. Often they excel at sports and games. When your child is older, she may work with children. She likes to have fun, but puts a lot of energy into work as well! She enjoys playing or coaching younger children. When she is on stage, she is in her media. The pitfalls of this placement are pride, disobedience and a tendency to be bossy. Emphasize the qualities -- humility, generosity of heart, service -- of true leaders.

Mon Tri Mar
Children with this energetic aspect are full of punch! It's probable that your child likes people, and finds it easy to get along with almost anybody! She could have an extra ounce of courage and daring! Some form of sports or physical creative discipline, such as dancing, will almost certainly appeal to her! (If either the Moon or Mars are in water signs, your child might take to the water like a fish!) your child is a natural! She knows how to motivate and inspire others and could be a mini-politician in her own right! Your child might enjoy coaching or training younger children. With her powerful spirit, she will attract many friends and positive experiences.

Mer Opp Mar
Its not what you say, but how you say it! Chances are, you'll remind your child of this adage on more than one occasion! How to pull the reins in on that tongue of her! It's more than likely that your child seldom stops to think before she speaks. Feelings may blurt out before she has time to catch them! Your child may pack a wallop of emotion into any debate! Nevertheless, her active mind could be teeming with ideas which she needs to share! If in mutable signs (Pisces/Virgo or Gemini/Sagittarius) emphasize mental clarity and prioritizing tasks. If in cardinal signs (Aries/Libra or Cancer/Capricorn) emphasize patience, listening to what the other guy has to say. If in fixed signs (Taurus/Scorpio or Leo/Aquarius) emphasize flexibility, and consideration for other peoples feelings (words can wound)! A journal may help your child develop her ideas. She is likely to be a great candidate for the debate club!

Mar Tri Jup
This aspect is a very fortunate influence in the chart, and is conducive to success in enterprises. Your child is likely to be enthusiastic and energetic in action. When she is motivated to do something, she probably goes after it in a big way! Others remark on her creative energy, great drive, and the fact that she never seems to let up! Children with this positive Mars-Jupiter contact are prompted to help people solve their problems. They particularly like to lend a hand to those in trouble or less fortunate circumstances. When personal problems arise, your child is not afraid to tackle them. This aspect often points to a love of adventure, sport and travel. It favors careers in law, social work and psychology, education (or training others), religion (especially preaching) and publishing.

Jupiter: The Teacher; Opportunity, Career and Life Path
The Hindu word for Jupiter is Guru. Jupiter is the guru and guide, the way we go through life, our life path and personal philosophy. Our first teachers and guides are usually our parents. Then there are our school teachers, ministers, and other significant adults who enter our life and guide us. Jupiter is the body of knowledge and wisdom made available to us, our method for dealing with the laws of life, our Saturn, or limitations. Saturn represents the father, structure, rules of behavior and social norms we must learn to abide by. Jupiter is the light or path. Jupiter rules religion, philosophy, culture, travel, history; how we expand our horizons, our philosophy of life. It has always been an indicator of how successful we may be, our vocation. In the child's chart, we look to Jupiter for clues as to how our child seeks to know more about life, what appeals to her, and where she may need to pull in the reins and balance exploration (Jupiter) with greater discipline (Saturn). A child with Jupiter in the 1st house in Aries, for example, will jump to the occasion for a trip, an experience to broaden her horizons and self-understanding but will need to find the balance between opportunities for growth and responsibilities (Saturn).

Jup Sag
Born with the opportunity planet in the sign of religion, law and philosophy, your child will seek out people and experiences that broaden her horizons. She could delight in travel, especially to faraway places where people speak a different language and eat different dishes. She embraces religion easily, or if religion is not a part of the early training, she could adopt a certain stance or philosophy. She doesn't like work for its on sake only, but sees her vocation as a vehicle for expressing her particular philosophy of living! Always on the go, your child may grow to be a skilled diplomat, negotiator, or representative. Honest, frank, and to the point, she could be prone to side-step routines whenever possible! She likely loves the outdoors, horses, travel, and sports. Especially if Jupiter positively aspects one or more of her personal planets, your child tends to look on the brighter side of things. She has an innate sense of things working out in the end. Generally independent, you may have difficulty convincing your child of the need for playpens, fences or curfews!

Sun Sqr Jup
The value of good timing and realism are keys best taught your child from birth! With good Saturn placements, your child may know just how to balance enthusiasm with diligence and self-discipline. Considered by itself, this aspect can lead to a tendency to go "over-board," to be wasteful or extravagant. Due to an inflated sense of self-importance, advice from elders could fall by the wayside. If this is the case, then your child would in effect, to use an old adage, be her own (at times) worst enemy. As parents you need to be realistic in your own aspirations for her. In addition, there is a possibility of difficulty with authorities and elders. She must learn to listen (at least once in awhile) to advice given to her in her own best interests!

Mon Tri Jup
Children born with this positive Moon/Jupiter aspect are basically optimistic by nature, affectionate and fun to be around. Your child may have a knack for finding assistance, and things just tend to work out well for her. In fact, her ability to rally support makes a public career of one kind or another quite probable. Success is indicated in education, politics, or the law. She knows how to attack and solve problems, whether personal or public. Chances are, your child has grace and social skills, an ability to interact with many kinds of people. She may show a love for travel and foreign lands.

Mer Sxt Jup
Your child enjoys working with her mind and can usually find a solution to even the worst problems. She likes to solve puzzles and dilemmas. Her skills in this regard make her expert at counseling and guiding others. Fine verbal skills and a natural sense of justice makes legal work a distinct possibility. Working with laws, natural or man-made, amounts to a real talent. Your child also has a great interest in ideas, the more true and lasting the better. Religious concepts will likely be a lifelong concern for her. She loves to travel and may even spend some time studying away from home.

Mar Tri Jup
Your child is a great doer, an accomplisher. Her outgoing nature, coupled with extremely skillful ways of handling other people, make her a natural for working with or for audiences. She is likely to be popular in school, and may organize many social events. Your child would make an excellent teacher or coach, and helping others to make important (career) decisions is a skill that will blossom as she grows. She has plenty of drive and may excel at sports. She may tend to overdo things; overspend, overeat, overplan (such as in inviting 10 more children than you've room for to her birthday party!) Teach her to be economical with time, energy and funds. This aspect is considered to be a positive and protective influence!

Saturn: The Lawgiver; Rules, Responsibility, Trials, Growth, Father
Saturn rules the laws and limitations of this material world we all live in. Saturn indicates where we are bound to learn, the narrowness that makes our way felt, the walls that make homes possible. Saturn holds us together as much as apart. Saturn represents the law and is said to be the Great Teacher. Saturn defines and clarifies. Saturn represents the reality of life in the physical universe. We understand how vital it is that our children learn to accept responsibility, maintain their environment in order, finish homework and projects on time, learn how to delay gratification. Hopefully, they learn as they grow how to turn mistakes into lessons, obstacles into stepping stones to success. Saturn represents the father or dominant parent, all adults whom the child looks up to as authorities. Saturn represents the law of the land we're born into, the family rules and traditions and our own innate or developed sense of fairness.

Saturnian qualities are rarely self-evident in the small child. Children have to learn self-discipline, order, patience, obedience. This they do in cycles of time. Saturn represents the process of maturity, the outlines for growth presented to us by our teachers and our inner biological clock. Saturn by sign, house, aspect and Saturn cycles in your child's chart and in your own provide a wonderful blueprint whose design you can follow to help your children grow to be successful in this world.

Sat Pis
Your child was born with Saturn, the Great Teacher, in the sign of compassion. Children with Saturn in Pisces typically feel duty bound to reach out and help others. This placement may indicate the need to overcome fears, often at the subconscious level. The imagination can be overactive and the child can easily become anxious. The child may be supersensitive, picking up on other people's problems but sensing them as her own. Your child will benefit by open communication with an understanding parent to allay her fears. She can channel her imagination creatively through art, music, singing or writing. Encourage your child not to get caught up in what was, but rather to experience what now is and to look forward to what will be. Discourage whining and self-pity. Help your child find effective ways to confront and master even difficult situations or trying emotions.

Children born with Saturn in Pisces may tend to blame themselves for the shortcomings of their parents. Your child may enjoy quiet periods of meditation when she can feel at peace with herself and her environment. A healthy self-esteem developed during the childhood years is essential to avoid the typical Piscean pitfalls; worrying, escapism, guilt, self-doubt. On the bright side, children with this placement are understanding and caring. This position favors work in social services, healing arts, or behind the scenes work (in hospitals, monasteries, prisons, or as cinematic directors).

Sun Cnj Sat
Perhaps your child is a touch too sober. Much depends on other aspects formed by the Sun and Saturn. But she is not afraid to shoulder more than her share of responsibility. Your child may seem quite mature for her age. Even as a child, she will likely be more interested in meaningful work than in play. She can't wait to grow up and take the driver's seat and probably enjoys interacting with authorities, elders and teachers with great mutual respect. As a child, she could feel somewhat lonely because of this seriousness, but her hard-working nature will pay off in later years. A serious, perhaps difficult relationship with the father may be indicated. The father may be seen by the child as restrictive or excessively strict or absent. If Saturn and the Sun receive positive aspects as well, then perhaps the father is very supportive of the child. The child may perceive him as not only as her father, but also as her teacher and guide. Children with this aspect may be born "achievers," accustomed to an upward climb (although for most, this may not be apparent until they are older).

Jup Sqr Sat
Your child may have to work especially hard when it comes to matters of self-discipline. She needs consistent training and education. Your child may tend to go against authority (parents, teachers, adults in general), clashing with them rather than finding a way to work with and learn from them. You can help your child master this square and avoid the pitfalls, by teaching her sound personal habits during childhood, such as completing tasks and putting away personal belongings in their right place, being on time, promising only that which she can realistically fulfill, and having the patience to get the training necessary to get the job done. Follow-through is critical in school work and later in career training. Although she may tend to live as if there were no tomorrow, your child needs to be willing to accept responsibilities and obligations. If organization and punctuality are not stressed during childhood, it could hamper her career potential later on.

During her youth the child with this aspect could set herself up against authorities. Perhaps she feels that her attempts to reach out for meaningful experiences are thwarted by parents (particularly the father), rules, family or religious traditions. If the socio-cultural or religious background is (perceived as) excessively rigid or prejudicial, the child could break from family tradition when she is older.

The Outer Planets

In the previous sections, we have dealt with planets that we can see with our naked eyes. In general, these planets refer to life as we know and live it and are the so-called inner planets. Beyond these are three planets that are not visible in the sky and which have cycles longer than the average human life span. Since they are beyond Saturn or time, astrologers call them the trans-personal or transcendental planets -- Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Here you will find information on issues and attitudes typical of your child's generation. Uranus represents the sense of discovery, new frontiers, revolutions and consequent changes we make. Neptune reveals how we understand and accept these discoveries, our understanding of mystical and/or inner realities, the expression of devotion and compassion. Pluto points to the great challenges confronting ourselves and our civilization. How can we best prepare our children to meet these challenges? To fulfill their fiery destiny individually and collectively? To stand firm amidst the winds of change? To reach out for worlds beyond the physical? To feel secure in their relationship to God? For most of us, the challenges increase as we mature but certainly the foundation is set in childhood!

Uranus: The Awakener; Rebellion, Breakthroughs, Insights, Originality
Uranus is the planet that indicates how we free ourselves from the difficulties and problems life presents us. Uranus represents our link to the higher mind, Universal Intelligence. Here is the way insights come to us, how we discover or come to know and understand ourselves. Uranian energy shows us how to find new uses for old things. It rules inventions and sudden insights into our life -- everything that is unusual, eccentric, and out of the ordinary. Uranus is, in many ways, the opposite, or undoing of Saturn. We look to Uranus in the child's chart to understand her personal sense of uniqueness, where she dares to be different. Uranus also may reveal individual genius, talent, interests. With hard aspects, or if Uranus is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th houses, we may have to deal with willfulness and/or rebelliousness in the child, or she may perceive herself as somehow different from the rest. Parents and teachers can help the child with strong Uranian aspects by providing her with avenues for individual expression and creativity, and by recognizing her natural bent to experiment with new ways of doing things. At the same time, the child needs to learn that there is no true freedom without accountability. Be consistent in applying the rules. She needs to know the consequences of her use of free will.

Ura Cap
Your child was born into a sub-generation who may change the world, bringing us a new government and economy. They will seek a way to couple the best of traditional values and New Age ideals. Children born with this placement may be interested in the political and business arena as adults. Ever practical, the Uranus in Capricorn individual comes up with new or alternate forms of management -- breakthroughs in top-level management and corporate styles. Agriculture and architecture will undergo radical changes under their direction. Since they will challenge the ways of their elders, they likely will experience clashes with authorities during childhood. If Uranus aspects personal planets, the child will need to learn to control anger. She will benefit from opportunities to learn to wield power with humility and kindness.

Ven Cnj Ura
Your child cherishes whatever is different and out of the ordinary. The commonplace and the humdrum are not for her. Her friends and surroundings -- everything around her -- are apt to be unconventional to the point of being controversial. Her friends may be off-beat. Your child sets a high value on being different. Use stories and real life examples to teach her the folly of "on the spot" romances. She may have some really interesting friends--possibly New Age or scientific-- and doesn't want to be tied down. Your child could have a love for freedom, perhaps for flying and aviation.

Neptune: The Savior; Illusion, Ideals, Imagination, Spirituality
Neptune provides the key for unlocking our child's imagination! Neptune represents the bridge to worlds we cannot see. Neptune, then, tells us about the child's need for worship, adoration, devotion. Neptune relates to music and the arts and is prominent in the charts of many creative people. Being an outer planet, Neptune also paints a picture of the collective dreams of our child's generation, dreams which may build upon, alter or even challenge our own. Neptune's influence tends to be subtle, often affecting us on subconscious levels. If afflicted, Neptune can indicate areas where the child may feel confused, uncertain or fearful. Read Neptune by sign, house and aspect but realize that your child may not consciously be aware of Neptune's influence until she reaches adulthood.

Nep Cap
The practical is the ideal. Your child was born into a group of dynamic children who will seek to obtain power and control. They will bring order out of the prevailing world chaos and change they grew up in. Although they may spend their childhood years in times of global hardship, they will grow up to usher in a Golden Age. Your child and her peers will seek ways to incorporate spiritual truths into government and management. If Neptune afflicts personal planets, she could be too critical of herself or of authority figures. She benefits through consistent and clear direction from grown-ups and a structured work environment.

Ven Cnj Nep
Your child places a high value on dreams and ideals and doesn't consider them otherworldly or impossible. She has a love of the sea and of whatever bridges that which separates us. Mysticism, mythology, poetry, and music come naturally. Because she has a natural sense of devotion, she would benefit from a path of true religious training. Your child needs to develop a strong sense of identity and self-esteem lest she allow others to take advantage of her kindness or be indiscriminate in her choice of friends (partners). She seeks a way to help others, for she is more compassionate than most. For the same reason, your child could be overly impressionable or easily hurt by unthinking friends.

Ura Cnj Nep
Your child may have real vision and insight into the unity that ties this world together. She could have a brilliant imagination and enchanting manner. She may spend a lot of time in her imagination. Your child may be a seer, in the true sense of the word, and could possess a waking experience of that part of us that is mystical and dreamlike. Your child finds new ways to bring people together, to unify situations. She might be unusually musical, or inventive.

Pluto: The Shadow; Deep Fears, Inner Change, Growth, Regeneration
Pluto is the planet of profound change, of generation and regeneration. Pluto often touches upon the most sensitive psychological areas within us. Once touched, we have no choice but to change and grow. If Pluto aspects a personal planet in your child's chart, she will experience an intense desire for self-transformation on some level of her being. Pluto contacts often teach us through intense experiences. We feel as if we've lived several lifetimes in one! The struggle of our century with nuclear power is a Plutonian issue. Will this intense power be used as a dynamo of life or to devastate life? Stress the positive, be ready to help your child navigate through intense emotions she may feel, but not necessarily comprehend. Teach her to express this power wisely.

Plu Sag
Your child was born into a generation passionate in their search for truth. Nothing superficial or ephemeral holds their attention. An intense analytical approach to life cuts through to the heart of things. This directness may not always endear them to others, who may see them as blunt. Politics and religion will reach new heights. During Pluto's transit through this sign, the world may enter the dawning of a Golden Age. With hard aspects to personal planets (especially Mars), Pluto in Sagittarius can indicate a tendency to be vindictive.

Ven Sxt Plu
Your child may have exceptional artistic talent. Study Venus by house and sign to understand in what area of life your child will seek creative expression. (In the 1st, in dress and appearance; in the 2nd, with money and beautiful things; in the third, in speech and mannerisms, etc.) she also may have a deep understanding of other people and may be attracted to fields dealing with psychology when she grows up. Your child learns a lot about herself through relationships she forms throughout her life. Some of these may be on the intense side, but even as your child learns about herself, others may feel transformed through contact with her! Some children with this powerful trine between Venus (art, beauty, attraction, money) and Pluto (the masses, television, intense emotions) could do well in business careers, modeling, television, movie careers or in politics.

Ura Sxt Plu
Your child may be a whiz when it comes to knowing how to motivate others. Her keen mind and great analytical powers always manage to get at whatever motivation is beyond apparent behavior. If Uranus and Pluto aspect personal planets as well, your child could be inventive, clever, insightful. This is a generational aspect, indicative of a group who live through tremendous upheaval, not without ultimate benefits!

Nep Sxt Plu
This aspect belongs more to the times, describing the opportunity at hand for great change through understanding of profound spiritual laws. It points to the interest in psychology so prevalent in this century. The times themselves prove to be a great teacher.

CHALLENGES AND ABILITIES

Focus
These are areas of intense focus and activity in the child's chart. For better or worse, these qualities stand out and are obvious to all those who come to know her. They are very clear parts of her character.

Sun Cnj Sat Orb 02 01'

Ven Cnj Ura Orb 02 04'
This child may want free reign to choose her friends who may not always be run of the mill! She values independence and unique talents in others. She may be reluctant to get tied down. A balanced understanding of the question of freedom and commitment in relationships will be more important when she is older. Others are attracted to her because she is generally cheerful and may have a magnetic personality. She enjoys sharing with other children. Your child may radiate a catching "joie de vivre." She probably has a penchant for inventions, electronics, and new-age technology.

Ven Cnj Nep Orb 06 15'

Potential
Life can be challenging, and things are not always easy. The major challenges in a natal chart are where we can expect increased activity and personal involvement -- ready or not. These critical areas of life can be difficult, and the resulting confusion and possible obscuration often makes it hard for us to see and act with normal clarity. Some of these aspects are apparent in little children, others describe yourselves, her parents and teachers, and the environment you provide for her. Other aspects may show up later, at about age 12 or older, even in young adulthood. Your knowledge of these areas in your child's chart should give you a greater understanding as to how to help her turn stumbling blocks into rings on the ladder of success. Therefore, when it comes to the following factors in your child's chart, you may wish to exercise extra patience.

Mer Opp Mar Orb 00 10'
Your child may put a lot of feeling into what she says. Others sense in her high energy and a certain tension. Children with this aspect typically have quick minds, an even sharper tongue, and a penchant for argumentation! This aspect often indicates impatience and irritability and you may need to be very patient in reminding your child to curb her tongue.

Sun Sqr Jup Orb 01 25'

Talents and Abilities

Despite whatever problems we may have, there are areas of life where we have clear insight and real talent -- natural ability. When it comes to these matters, our judgment is sharp and we always manage to take charge. We have the knack. It may be as simple as the ability to work hard and accomplish things without something going wrong. An innate sense of the workings of these parts of life makes it easy for us to learn and accomplish things where they are concerned. Positive aspects in your child's chart are like money in the bank. It does little good if not wisely invested. Too much ease in a chart can result in lack of motivation. Therefore, provide your child with opportunities to bring out and develop areas of inherent ability.

Ven Sxt Plu Orb 00 23'

Mar Tri Jup Orb 01 51'

Mon Tri Jup Orb 04 05'

Mon Sxt Mer Orb 05 46'
This aspect indicates fluency in communication. Even if your child has an emotional personality, you will be able to reach her through dialogue. She could be a fine speaker. She is likely to be most persuasive! This Moon-Mercury aspect often indicates success in life due to a positive mental attitude.

Mon Tri Mar Orb 05 56'
Children with this aspect tend to be attractive and physically active. They often enjoy group sports. This child seldom hides how she feels and therefore is no stranger to an occasional argument! She may receive plenty of emotional support as a child, especially from her mother. Nevertheless, she may have to learn to work out her anger.

Particularly if the mother is easy to anger, the child could be implosive or explosive. Patience! (For a greater understanding of this aspect, check out Mars by sign.)

MAJOR LIFE PERIODS

What follows amounts to a brief overview of the first thirty years or so of your child's life -- a road map of the years to come. Since childhood, adolescence, and early adult life are so crucial to each of us, an attempt has been made to describe these formative years. Based on the gradual movement of the planet Saturn, this is one of the most tested of all astrological techniques. It is used by almost every professional astrologer as part of any personal consultation. Provided that your child's time of birth is more or less accurate, you will find this information both accurate and informative.

By age seven, the child has absorbed an enormous amount of learning. Her physical body has reached 70% of her growth potential. Permanent teeth (teeth relate to Saturn) begin to emerge. She passes from the absorbent mind stage into the stage of active reason. She is on her way to becoming an independent adult. Saturn represent rules and laws. At seven years of age, Saturn forms its first square and you can expect your child "to test the law," at home and at school. Astrologically, this is a critical point in her development. The Saturn cycle depicts a fairly easy childhood (all else being equal) up until around the 11th or 12th year, at which time your child may begin to become more subjective and inner-directed. This could mean that during her adolescence, she may feel somewhat introspective. At about age 14 or 15, Saturn opposes its own position in the chart and most teens pass through a kind of identity crisis. Balance is the key but the adolescent who says to herself, how can I be free to make my own decisions, but who is usually not ready to leave the nest! This inner time of exploration lasts until she is about 18 or 19 years of age. At that time, she likely will proceed to take hold, discover herself, and become more outward -- in a rather short time. Her sense of confidence should take hold and build, and the years of introspection will pay off as she begins to reach out. The years from 18 through 25 or 26 are likely to be characterized by hard work and continued gains in self-confidence. From the 26th year, her most opportune time for the climb to fame and fortune will commence. Provided she takes advantage of these cycles, the 30s and 40s should be materially successful years.

Now for a close-up of recent years: while landscape was quite general, the dates given in this close-up should be much more precise. Don't look here for a day-to-day account of life but rather to get a picture of this stretch of time, "these years." If you look at the page at the beginning of the report entitled "The Houses in Childhood," you'll see a wheel divided into four quadrants. You might call the quadrants "dimensions of experience." The two quadrants (six signs) in the lower hemisphere have more to do with personal, subjective experience; my home, my belongings, my self-expression, my habits, etc. The two quadrants in the upper hemisphere have more to do with our interaction with others and our outer contribution; our relationship, our things, friends, enemies, elders, etc. Saturn, the great tester, takes from six to seven years to traverse each quadrant. In 28 to 30 years, Saturn will return to its natal position at birth and we experience the so-called "Saturn return." At age 14 (first Saturn opposition) and again at age 29 (first Saturn return), we become very aware of Saturn's influence in our life. Important events, or points of growth may occur around age seven as well (first Saturn square). I do not believe, however, that the child is AWARE of Saturn's influence in a personal sense. Saturn in the child's chart may indicate conditions in his environment, his relationship to others, and especially to his father and other significant authority figures in his life. Saturn represents the law, limits, restrictions, attitude toward responsibilities, hard work, and fairness. The child learns these in stages. A Saturnian key is "maturity."

Please note that for Newborns and children less than seven years of age, the report may indicate a year prior to the actual birth of the child. If this is the case for your child, it means that Saturn was at the degree on the cusp of the quadrant in question on the date indicated. If this occured about 3 years ago, for example, Saturn will remain in that quadrant for about 4 more years.

APR 13, 1996 1st Pass D> (Age 1 1m)
NOV 25, 1996 2nd Pass R< (Age 1 8m)
DEC 11, 1996 3rd Pass D> (Age 1 9m)

By the last date shown, Saturn, the great tester, conjoined the Midheaven and entered the 10th house of your child's chart. The 10th house is one of the 4 "Angular" houses. When Saturn enters an angular house, it signifies a gradual shifting of gears. The 10th house in the child's chart relates to the father or father figure, to all significant elders or authorities in the child's life and also to her reputation and status among her peers. This is an earth house, one of "works." The older child could make significant progress in her schoolwork during this time. If she is so inclined. She could take up a position of responsibility at home or at school. She may be particularly interested in pursuing what she wants to do when she grows up! She could be helped or hindered by parents. She may work well with restrictions, limits, and responsibilities or buck against them and feel frustrated, depending on her character and upbringing. This could be a good period to master a skill of one kind or another. In accordance with her abilities and the opportunities available to her, this should be a cycle of achievement. The older child can show what she has mastered. Even with younger children, this is a time to place an emphasis on right attitudes toward responsibilities and authorities.

THE ELEMENTS, MODALITIES, AND ANGULARITY

Elements, modalities, and house quadrants. These are all techniques used by astrologers to gain a general picture of energy patterns and focus, temperament and modes of action. How do your child's planets and houses total up? Which does she have in abundance, and which does she lack, if any? Those with high totals show what we can or must do in life; plus points to be developed. These are qualities we have. "Wants" are areas that may be weaker and need developing or balance. Sometimes people overcompensate the "wants" and even pretend to have them. The old adage is: we become what we want (or lack), while we do what we can (or have to do) with what we've got. Here are your child's totals:

Have Fire
Your child's innate positivism lets her get right to the point! She may have little patience with those who are shilly-shally. She has plenty of enthusiasm and warms up to things and people quickly. Your child has an inner self-confidence which burns with its own light.

Want Water
Your child may have trouble understanding those who seem emotional or sentimental, yet her own practicality and intellectual approach may attract just such types into her life. She needs your guidance getting in touch with her feelings, and acknowledging those of others. She may try to balance her lack of empathy with logic and common sense. (A strong Moon, Venus or Neptune by sign, aspects and/or house position or a Water sign Ascendant could compensate.)

Want Air
Some children with this emphasis find it hard getting their ideas across to others, sometimes feeling inadequate in matters that require logic or the use of mental powers. Most however, are simply so busy, they would simply benefit by learning to take the time to reflect before acting. Your child is likely to be bigger on actions than on words. Avoid long lectures with this child: active measures of discipline, such as logical consequences, would be more effective! (A strong Mercury by sign, aspect or house position or an Air sign Ascendant would compensate.)

Have Mutable
Your child is apt to be communicative, flexible, mental, and other-oriented. She could be a natural teacher. She could be restless, liking plenty of variety.

Want Cadent
This is a busy pattern -- showing the need to master the daily details: being on time, schedules, tasks. Your child makes contact with a lot of people.

PATTERNS; INNER AND OUTER SELF

Here we are examining basic patterns, called astrological configurations, within your child's charts. These will reveal much about your child's basic attitude or approach to life. The more one studies astrology, the more it comes down to a basic understanding of these simple patterns. The configurations can provide valuable information as to the general direction of your child's life, and her mode of action. It is particularly interesting to note differences in comparing the Heliocentric and Geocentric patterns. While Heliocentric interpretations are still in an experimental stage, some modern astrologers suggest that a comparison of these patterns reveals the difference, if any, between our outer personality (the way we appear to others) and our real inner self; how are we, in fact, as people get to know us? Not all people are as they seem.

Geo Tri --- --- Hel Sqr
Appearances can be deceiving, and here is a case in point. Your child's appearance (the way she comes across) and personality suggest that she may be inward, quiet, and concerned about what other people think. This, in truth, is not 100% the case. Although gentle-mannered, conservative, and sensitive on the outside, she likely is as tough as nails on the inside -- as anyone can testify who gets to know her very well. Her more sensitive style may well hide a strong, assertive, and quite confident nature. Your child probably feels at home in a crowd and enjoys the attentions of others. A mild mannered smoke-screen could hide a real tiger! Appearances aside, let's take a look at the real or inner person.

Inner Meanings, Life Patterns

Square Type
Your child may be independent, confident, and in some ways a little self-centered. She loves attention and somehow manages to gravitate to the center of whatever is happening. Others accept her, for they sense she is a leader and admire her almost regal manner. Yet as much as she may love attention and the crowd, she is also likely to be fiercely protective of her independence, sense of freedom, and -- above all -- her privacy! There is a kind of contradiction here. When in the mood, she may love to express herself, entertain and perform for others, and enjoys being surrounded by an audience. She is magnetic and dynamic, and could inspire others. Nevertheless, for all her confidence, she may tend to depend on others for advice and counsel.

Your child is likely to be a very feeling person and can sense the drift of a situation without a lot of analysis. This immediate "hands-on" approach might be contrasted with one that is more deliberate and cerebral. She could be more comfortable in the realm of action than abstraction!

Inner Keys

Each person has one or more key qualities. Here we are not referring to the outer appearance or personality, but rather to inner qualities: how someone is when we really get to know them.

Sun
"I AM THAT I AM!" Your child is her own reason for being. She is likely to be self-reliant and assertive. Her dreams, visions, and ideals propel her from within. She may have to encounter the whole gamut of ego games in deciding which "me" she wants to be. With experience, she will find that when she follows the inner guide, her aspirations are true and serve to show the way. She must learn humility and patience.

Sat
At heart, your child has a deep sense of responsibility and purpose, and this seriousness is genuine and felt by others. She is willing to take on responsibility and may seem like she was born "grown-up." she seems to gravitate to those things which last and hold true, and is always separating the wheat from the chaff. She manages to get down to the bare bones. Matters of law, religion, and philosophy hold her interest. In this life, she may pass through many trials and accomplish much.

Keys to Understanding Your Child's Personality

Mar
All things pale beside your child's basic drive and the emotions she so freely exhibits. Action and desire could be one and the same for her. She could be headstrong and assertive. She could be at her best in leadership roles. Success comes through taking the reins on her energy, in learning to think and plan effectively rather than act impulsively.

Throughout her life, your child is likely to pass through periods of tremendous self-transformation. On inner levels, she is apt to feel driven and intense in her pursuit of change and inner growth. She seeks to burn through superficialities, searching for opportunities to face the truth and render the evident to view. This ceaseless analytical activity, while central to her nature, may be the source of discomfort to others. Power plays may be no stranger to her. She must learn selflessness.

The Personal Hot Spot

Ven
The main focus of change and high activity in your child's chart is her value system, her likes and dislikes, the way she feels about things. Expressing love in relationships may be all encompassing for her. She may have refinement, enjoy beautiful things, be artistic.

HOUSE ACTIVITY AND EMPHASIS

The twelve houses of the horoscope, particularly when they are occupied by a planet, provide a clue to areas of special activity in the child's life and development. They paint a picture of the environment in which she will work out the challenges and talents signified by the planets and aspects. Here is an analysis of house activity based on planet emphasis:

1st House
The 1st house is the house of "Me!" How I see myself, the "me" I would like to be, and how others see me: in short, my identity. The key phrase of the first house is "I AM." This house rules our personal self and everything about us that draws a reaction from our surroundings or from others. The 1st house describes the early childhood environment (or the child's perception of it). Much of the child's identity will be a reflection of the environment in which she grows up. The child's projected image (personality) will reflect her experience and assimilation of her interaction with others.

The sign on the Ascendant (1st house cusp) and its ruler (see intro.) are key components to understanding your child's emerging personality. Any planet "rising" in the 1st house is going to color the personality considerably. For example, if Neptune is in the 1st house, the child will be sensitive and impressionable, no matter what sign is on the Ascendant. A child with Venus in the 1st house is likely to be attractive and charming. Mars in the 1st house is common in the charts of athletes. Astrologers will often blend the characteristics of the Sun sign with the sign on the Ascendant. For example, a child with an Aries Sun is usually somewhat self-centered. If the child, however, has Pisces Rising then she is likely to be assertive but compassionate and interested in serving others. Sometimes, however, the child may experience a conflict; in this case, for instance, part of the child may want to jump right into new experiences (Aries) whereas another part may be shy or afraid (Pisces). The child could feel overwhelmed (Pisces) by the stern parental rebuke given in response to a typically Arian impulsive action! All this may seem very complex, but you can take it step by step.

Are any of us really all that simple to understand? You will have to study well the Sun sign and the Ascendant (and the sign and house the Ruler is in) plus the nature of any planet in the 1st house. Learn the keys, be sensitive and observe the child. You will see how it all comes together.

Can
Cancer is the mother of the zodiac, always making a home, protecting and providing for others. The house with Cancer on the cusp is where your child is likely to look for security. The child could be particularly sensitive to the issues of that house.

2nd House
The key phrase of the 2nd house is "I have." The 2nd house, then, deals with our material security, our means of livelihood, our resources and talents, and how we utilize the resources of this world. The 2nd house also reveals much about our values, what is valuable to us. We study this house for clues as to the child's basic attitudes and sense of self-worth. The sign on the second house cusp and any planets in the 2nd house will tell you how your child is most likely to deal with things. Here we see her attitude toward her belongings. Responsibility, stewardship, and sharing all come into play here.

If your child does not have any planets in the 2nd house, look to the sign, house and aspects of the planet ruling the sign on the cusp, and to the planet Venus, for clues as to money making potential and spending habits.

Leo
Leo energy is expressive and concerned with dramatic self-awareness and a sense of pride and ownership. Here is a sense of confidence from which the emotive and outgoing Leo energy operates. Often very artistic, and always theatrical and expressive, this sign is good for creativity and the arts. Your child may seek creative means to express herself through the affairs of the house with Leo on the cusp.

Mar 2nd
Your child is motivated to accumulate possessions. Typically, she is industrious and willing to work hard to receive her reward. An urge to respond, own, and build upon whatever comes her way makes her a natural when it comes to productivity. This is a great position for the business world! Watch out for an excessive concern with material things. Teach your child right values from early childhood on. She may need help in learning to share and may want to be "King of the sandbox" or not play at all! A test in life for her may well be to let go of possessiveness! Your child may have mechanical ability.

3rd House
The key phrase for the 3rd house is "I think." At no time is the 3rd house more important than during childhood. This is because the 3rd house is the house of early education. The astrologer looks to the sign on the 3rd house cusp, its ruler and any planets abiding there (and to the planet Mercury) to get a picture of the child's approach to learning. The 3rd house is a very mental house, concerned with finding, researching, communicating, and all manner of questioning. Traditionally this house rules brothers and sisters. Planets in the 3rd house can tell you something about your child's interaction with her siblings, and with neighborhood pals. Children with personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) in the 3rd house tend to be very active at school.

Vir
Virgo energy is analytical and precise, always separating what is worthwhile and worth supporting from that which is outmoded and of no further use. The affairs of the house with Virgo on the cusp reveal the area of life in which the child seeks to serve, and/or where she may take a systematic and detailed approach.

4th House
The 4th house is the house of the home and family. The 4th house represents our roots and also relates to our perception of our mother. The sign on the 4th house cusp and any planets abiding here describe the early home environment. Young children yearn to feel secure within the arms of mother and father, within the walls of home. The small child fears abandonment. This house tells about the emotional foundation upon which the rest of the chart can stand or collapse. Traumatic childhood scenes take years to resolve. A memory of a nurturing and secure experience helps the adult get through many a storm. Since many of the early patterns are repeated, the fourth house (and the sign, house position and aspects of the Moon) describes how your child is likely to manage her own family one day. Land and property also come under the fourth house domain.

Lib
Libra energy is always facilitating and responsive, assuming the appropriate reaction or response to any question or statement. This is certainly the social sign, par excellence. The affairs of the house with Libra on the cusp indicate where your child may enjoy working with a close pal; this may also be where she must learn lessons in cooperation.

Libra can tie in the theme of beauty and diplomacy into the affairs of the house whose cusp it is on

5th House
The 5th house is the house of dramatic self-expression; its key phrase is "I create." Many actors have planets here. The 5th house relates to fun and recreation: planets in the 5th house plus the sign on the cusp provide clues as to what kind of recreation your child might enjoy. Fire signs may like sports, competitive games and outdoor exploration. An Earth sign on the cusp could take to nature walks, hiking, building, mechanics. For these children, work can be fun! Children with Air signs on the 5th house cusp are going to enjoy mixing with other people. A Water sign on the 5th house cusp may enjoy family outings, be attached to loved ones, find their niche through the arts.

The giving and receiving of love is also connected with this house. Children with personal planets in this house (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars) feel most fulfilled when they are actively creating, sharing, expressing their emotions.

Sco
Scorpio is the most dynamically creative sign and the most abused! Intense, passionate, and very personal, Scorpio rushes past superficialities and right to the heart of any matter. Scorpio relates to sex, death, regeneration and resources we share with others. Scorpio energy will intensify and concentrate the affairs of the house whose cusp it sits on.

Jup 5th
Warm, affectionate, dramatic, funny and kind: one or all of these qualities may describe your child. This Jupiter placement cheers up an even otherwise more seriously cast chart! Remember, to be happy your child must create, for Jupiter here says "look at me!" Your child could be successful working with creativity and self-expression through the arts and theater, in sports, or with the ultimate self-expression, children. She may grow to be a guide and teacher to others when it comes to these matters. Especially if Jupiter is in Scorpio, or in a fire sign, she is likely to project a magnetic personality. This position gives a love of fun and entertainment. To motivate your child, look for ways to make learning fun! Although sincerely concerned with the welfare of others, this placement may point to a tendency to overextend oneself or promise more than one can deliver. The 5th house relates to gambling and taking chances and Jupiter here may point to a career in stocks and banking, or in sports!

Plu 5th
Individuals born with Pluto in the house of romance, creativity and children (5th) experience spiritual regeneration through the giving and receiving of love. Profound changes and inner growth occur during periods of intense creativity, romantic involvement, or working with children. During childhood, the creative intensity of this placement is best channeled; perhaps through the development of artistic skills, through sports and games, or school plays. Your child may take games very seriously, always measuring what the outcome will be. She may have trouble seeing "it's just a game." Gamblers and stockbrokers often have Pluto in the house of fun! This child needs opportunities to express herself as well as plenty of affection and respect. She needs to learn to be sincere and kind to others, as this placement sometimes brings power plays into relationships in adult life. If Pluto is afflicted, the child may need help overcoming blocks to self-expression or may feel (justifiably or not) unloved.

6th House
The key phrase of the 6th house is "I work." That which was conceived in the 5th house is applied and produced in the 6th! In an adult chart, this house indicates employment, attitude toward work, and relationship with employees and/or co-workers. In the child's chart, we study the 6th house to understand her daily habits. How she handles her chores, how she approaches her school work. Is her handwriting sloppy or neat? Is she happy to help others when asked or does she complain? The 6th house rules dress and appearance. This house also tells us about eating habits, diet and basic health. Obviously, eating habits and diet will affect health for better or for worse, as the case may be. A water sign on the cusp, or the Moon or Neptune in the 6th indicates that emotions will affect health and vice-versa. The sign on the cusp and planets in the 6th house can show you health areas that may require your attention.

Sag
Sagittarius is associated with religion, philosophy and travel. Your child may seek to "expand her horizons," or to express her highest ideals and personal philosophy through the affairs of the house on whose cusp Sagittarius is found.

7th House
The 7th house is the house of partnerships, relationships, social life, and all that carries us beyond our personal self into an awareness of other people, community, and the like. Children with planets in this house seek to understand themselves through others. They are rarely alone. How does your child deal with competition? Is she able to hold her own in a match? Can she stand up against peer pressure? To succeed with 7th house issues, the child needs to feel secure within herself (1st house polarity.) Planets in the 7th house and the sign on the cusp can also provide clues about your child's interaction, as she matures, with the opposite sex. For instance, a child with Mars in this house or Aries on the cusp would likely be bold in relationships, and hence, make friends easily. Nevertheless, she could incline toward arguments and contention (Mars) in close friendships (and later in marriage). She may, however, be willing to work hard (Mars) to make a relationship (7th house) work. The wise parent would teach this child the dangers of entering into relationships impulsively.

Cap
Capricorn is the business energy of the zodiac. Given to clear-headedness and practical insight, this sign takes a distanced perspective, a cool appraisal. Lessons in power may be indicated in the affairs governing the house hosting Capricorn on its cusp. Or this may be where your child is particularly willing to work hard for earned results.

Ven 7th
Your child loves the social scene and relationships of all kinds -- partners, marriages, teachers, and such. She herself is very responsive and values this in others. She has a strong sense of fairness. This position generally indicates popularity, charm and tact. Relationships with the opposite sex will be of prime importance later on so teach your child the right values. You need to help her develop a strong sense of self-esteem lest she search for herself always through the eyes of others! This child may feel happiest when in a harmonious and pretty environment; disorder and ugliness grate at her sense of refinement. (Likewise, looks may count a lot in the choice of companion. Teach her not to choose a book by its cover!) Venus in the 7th house favors careers related to law; this is also a good placement for counselors, buyers, florists, designers, jewelers, diplomats, public relations, receptionists & host(ess).

Ura 7th
As she grows, your child will seem to assert her independence with friends, close relationships and the social scene. Her friends (or approach) might be unconventional, to say the least. Teach her to stay clear of peers who are into drugs, drinking or who are in some way outwardly rebellious in behavior. Point out the dangers of entering serious relationships impetuously. All relationships require compromise in the sense of give and take. Individuals with the planet of independence (Uranus) in the house of partnership, marriage and others (7th) sometimes are reluctant to let go of their freedom and so avoid entering deep commitments. Teach your child to share, to meet a friend halfway. Lessons in cooperation are necessary, but may not be met with enthusiasm!

Nep 7th
At its best, this placement gives a heightened or spiritual understanding of others. Is your child giving away free advice to all her friends? If so, you may be witnessing the workings of a future counselor, psychologist or public relations manager! Her imagination comes alive when she is relating to others. Your child could tune into other people, or be easily influenced by their moods. She may tend to idealize her close friends (and later romantic partners), not wanting to look realistically at their faults. If afflicted, she will need your help in learning discernment in relationships (you might be able to save her from some heartbreak later on!) Sometimes this Neptune placement indicates karmic ties in marriage or partnerships. Teach your child to always be honest and reliable in dealing with others (and to avoid associating with people who lean toward deception). A well aspected Neptune could indicate an ideal or spiritual marriage.

8th House
The 8th house is traditionally the house of death and regeneration. This is the house of surgery: where something must be removed so something else can thrive. Thus, this house also covers initiation: getting rid of excess parts of ourselves that we no longer need so we can get to the heart and deeper meaning of life. The no-nonsense quality of the eighth house makes it good for business ventures since here we are stripping away the dross to reveal the truth or essence of the subject. But what meaning does the 8th house hold for the child? Any planets in the 8th house will give a Scorpio, hence deeply subjective, coloring to the chart. The key phrase here is "We have": for the adult, the 8th house relates to shared money, property, resources. It all begins during childhood. How does your child approach sharing her things with others, in carrying out joint responsibilities. Also, how does the child deal with pain, crises, even the death of significant others? This is the house of sex, and moreover, the house of desire. Planets in the 8th house and the sign on the cusp shed light on the child's ability to attract things to herself through desire, and to let go when necessary or right.

Aqu
Aquarius is the sign of brotherly love. Aquarian energy is futuristic, prophetic, communal. The focus is on the goal, and the goal is for the many, not the few. This sign tends toward independence. The house with Aquarius on the cusp sometimes indicates areas of special talents.

Mer 8th
Your child has a very analytical bent, and her mind excels at making practical decisions. Her ideas run deeper than superficial issues which could mean an interest in depth psychology and even occult and mystical subjects. Research, science, and medicine may especially appeal to her. Stock up on mystery novels, science fiction and tales of old Atlantis; they're all 8th house classics!

Particularly if she feels misunderstood by others, your child may tend to keep her thoughts to herself. Especially if Mercury is in a water or earth sign, she could be secretive to an extreme. Some children with this placement feel more at home expressing their feelings through art or music. A few of the professions favored by this placement are psychiatry, real estate, beauty salon work, insurance and taxes, accountants, banking and medical research.

9th House
The 9th house covers higher education, long journeys and religion (the longest journey of all). Here is what remains of the purification that takes place in the 8th house -- the seed, or essence, of an entire cycle of experience. Religion comes from a Latin word that means to bind back, and thus refers to all things that last or endure, such as the truth. Essential ideas, philosophy, and the courts of law belong here. In your child's chart, the 9th house reveals the influences shaping the's child's notions of right and wrong, her search for higher meaning, where she reaches out to know more, the (life-long) evolution of her belief system. As a youth, she is apt to be more concerned with her direct experience than with abstract thoughts. From these, however, she will draw conclusions shaping her beliefs. Priests, judges, historians, college professors, philosophers and explorers often have key planets here. The child with planets in the 9th house enjoys expanding her horizons through travel.

Pis
Pisces energy runs deep and toward the psychological -- whatever is beneath the surface. Pisces is said to be related to the past, to memories and to karma. Pisces pertains to "hidden enemies" and also to illumination. The affairs of the house with Pisces on the cusp may signal an area of vulnerability in the chart, where your child could be subject to illusion, or where she could be particularly sensitive, intuitive and imaginative. (i.e. Pisces on the 7th house cusp could indicate disappointments in relationships, perhaps due to a tendency to attract unstable partners. On the other hand, Pisces on the 7th house cusp could indicate a sensitive, spiritual partner).

Sun 9th
The child with the Sun in the 9th house is often direct and candid. She brushes past appearances and settles on the truth within. She is a seeker; for her, ideas, philosophy and religion are what life is all about! She may be a natural at languages and is likely to enjoy traveling even at an early age. Later in life, she may travel, counsel, and be a teacher to others. A natural explorer, she will be happiest in work that allows her to expand her horizons. Finishing tasks is an important stepping stone to later success! She needs a broad education, and has a natural bent toward history, religion and social studies. When she is older, she may be interested in law. This placement also favors publishing, traveling, teaching, sports, and sales.

Sat 9th
Please add these to your library: A subscription to National Geographic, a good encyclopedia, a Bible with easy to read print, a compendium of the world religions plus a few children's copies of the great religious dramas, such as the Hindu RAMAYANA. Additional recommendations: "Cultural Literacy" by Hirsch and a collection of the Shakespeare plays. Religion, philosophy, and truth are essential to your child's life. Or conversely, (when afflicted) this position sometimes manifests as narrowness of thought, but the latter is not so prevalent unless the child is brought up in a puritanical, fanatical, or bigoted household. A college education or advanced vocational training may be necessary for her to fulfill her aspirations! (Start saving up your college fund now!) Squares to Saturn could point to obstacles to overcome in obtaining higher education. Your child likely will pose many a question of what is right and what is wrong and why. She could appear to others as too sober or religious. A favorable position for education, law, preaching and publishing. Her career may somehow be linked with travel, foreigners, or import-export.

10th House
The 10th house is the point of crystallization, what we give back to the world in concrete form: hence, the 10th house deals with career, and subsequently status and reputation. The 10th house is connected with authorities: father, government, employer, Guru. In studying the planets in the 10th house plus the sign on the 10th house cusp in the child's chart (and Saturn), we discover clues about the nature of the child's ambitions (what she wants to do and who she wants to be when she grows up), how she deals with authorities, how she handles responsibility, and her relationship with her father or dominant parent. The child's way of dealing with her elders during childhood obviously will be transferred to dealing with her boss later on! Children with planets in the 10th house may be thinking ahead. Children with the Sun, Jupiter or Saturn or many planets in the 10th house often want to be someone of consequence in this world! The 10th house relates to Saturn and hence to maturation through time. Sometimes planets in the 10th house (especially the Sun or Saturn) indicate a need for much training before reaching the career goal.

Ari
Aries is the sign of the pioneer and leader. Aries energy is attention-getting and assertive, tending to provoke a response from the surroundings, from others. The house with the Aries cusp shows you in what area of life your child is most apt to be assertive, and even a bit impulsive. Here is where she can learn the lessons of patience.

Mon 10th
The child with the Moon (emotion/home/family) in the 10th house (ambition, status and reputation) wants to be someone of consequence! She begins quite early to seriously consider what she wants to be when she grows up!. The nature of her homelife (for better or for worse) directly affects her performance at school and later her career success. Your child has natural insight into public needs. Especially if the Moon is well aspected, she is at home making practical and management decisions. She may be attracted to running for student government, or taking an active role in a achievement oriented hierarchical youth programs such as Scouts. Her career will likely receive all kinds of support from other people (especially from women). She looks to her mother for strength and encouragement and her influence is great. If the Moon is afflicted, however, the mother could be over domineering. As a young adult, the child with this placement may have to separate herself from the family circumstance or tradition for a time to determine her true direction in life. This placement favors public service, government and politics; also agriculture, food services, marketing, services related to supplies. Often there are several changes before settling down into a given career.

11th House
We have been on the mountain and had a vision (10th house). In the 11th, we bond with others who share our vision and can help us realize it. Thus, this is the house of friends and community life. The young child is greatly influenced by her companions. As she matures (and particularly during pre-adolescence and teen-age years), peer pressure and conformity may take precedence over parental guidelines in her mind. Planets in this house and the sign on the 11th house cusp indicate what traits your child may admire in a friend and the kind of friends she is likely to attract. For example, if Uranus is in the 11th house or if Aquarius is on the cusp, the child would attract friends who are unique, unusual, somehow different. If Gemini is on the cusp, she may enjoy having many friends, but could be fickle. Traditionally, the 11th house is called the house of "hopes and wishes." The 11th house provides clues as to how to tune into the child's aspirations; how to teach her goal-fittedness; how to measure our projected aspirations for her against her own! The 11th house also addresses the child's willingness (or lack of it) to cooperate with others in group projects.

Tau
Taurus energy is stable. Here is where your child is likely to be resourceful, where talent may lie! She could perhaps make money from the issues related to this house. Taurus is the way we "have" things, how we possess and acquire things. The house cusp can tell you where the child might need to learn the lessons of obedience or non-attachment.

12th House
The 12th house is called the house of endings. This house is considered "karmic" in that here, within the layers of the subconscious, are buried the records of the past. The 12th house relates to fears and "hidden enemies": fears born of past memories. Here too we also uncover hidden strengths and the courage and illumination to transcend our fears. The 12th house relates to the imagination. A child with many planets in the 12th house could be extremely imaginative but could be so sensitive as to withdraw. Music, meditation, dance and art are good ways to bring 12th house children out of the "retreats." The sign on the 12th house cusp can tune you into potential areas of vulnerability in your child's psychic make-up, hidden fears, as well as hidden talent waiting to be drawn out! The 12th house shows the inclination to sacrifice for others. Many or key planets in this house could signify a career in medicine, social work, or behind the scenes production.

Gem
Gemini is concerned with connections and communication of all kinds; letters, wires, telephones, voice, thoughts, writing, and mental processes in general. Gemini is the gadfly, the communicator, the busy-body of the zodiac. The Gemini cusp can reveal in what area of life your child is apt to show curiosity, mental interest and diversity.
